volunteering projectOrganisation: OKO Project name: We live in Europe 12 months | 2019 – 2020

My name is Tamara and I’m a volunteer at OKO Centrum in Rychnov nad Kněžnou.

I’m going to start by sharing my experiences which started before I even came here. After the first interview, Jitka called me to tell me the answer, and as she said she wanted to see my happy face after telling me a piece of great news. It was a video call and at the very beginning because of the bad internet connection she wasn’t able to see my face and she asked me: “Is it MY Tamara?” That’s how everything started.

Now here I am, finishing my service in a few months and I have all those mixed feelings, I’m going to go back to my country soon and I’m happy and excited but on the other hand, I have to leave my Czech reality, where I feel at home and it makes me feel so so sad.

There are a lot of things which I want to share. But I will try to make it as short as possible.

What do we really mean when we are talking about Volunteering? It’s something that you do for others, without asking for anything back, helping people and communities, making their lives easier in any way we can.

How volunteering can change your life?

If you are a person like me, who can be in the same places for years and one day you wake up and feel a strong feeling you can’t describe, I can tell you what it is. It’s called “Time to Leave”.

I left my comfort zone and made a new one here. I learned a lot about Czech culture, the people, the country, and of course some of the language. And this process is mutual.

I have made a lot of new relationships which I will cherish always and they will take a very special place in my heart. This year is the most remarkable year in my life and thanks to OKO and ESC for giving me this opportunity.
